I wanted to leave an anonymous comment, since I am sharing some sensitive info. I am a lowly research technician at a major university, and I happen to have a female boss. Since I have yet to dive into a graduate program and all that follows, I have to say that Science Dude’s comments are extremely discouraging!
I did a count of male to female faculty members in our biology department: 56 male to 17 female. Does that make our biology department “female-friendly”? Yeah right. In reference to uneven financial compensation, I know that a male newbie professor, who just so happened to do his post-doc with my boss, already makes more money than she does and she has been doing this shit a long time. Fucked up!
