For Troy!

And here I stand,
My spirit shaken.
As another innocent,
Life was taken.
The justice system
Has failed again.
This wasn’t just,
It was revenge!

Humanity suffered at the hands of hate.
Trophy lives offered in the dark of night.
A nation blinded at 11:08…
More blood spilled to make things right.

And here I stand,
My tears loosed.
As his body’s buried
So goes the truth.
The justice system
Making me cringe.
Trading justice
For revenge!

Humanity suffered at the hands of hate.
Trophy lives offered in the dark of night.
A nation blinded at 11:08…
More blood spilled to make things right.

And here I stand,
In frustration,
Losing more faith
In this nation.
All meaning lost,
An empty call…
Pledging justice
For one and all!

Humanity suffered at the hands of hate.
Trophy lives offered in the dark of night.
A nation blinded at 11:08…
More blood spilled to make things right.

And here I stand,
My spirit shaken.
As another innocent,
Life was taken.

DJ Mydnyt’s Fourth Album Released (With Single & B-sides)

As many of you may or may not know, I have an ongoing side project under the moniker DJ Mydnyt. And I am proud to announce the completion and virtual release of the new album, Original DJ. This fourth installment is complete with new tracks never before heard, and handfuls of tracks that have been previewed around the web and in the podcast.

The funnest part of compiling and creating this album tied between re-imagining two of my favorite poems (Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven and Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken) to music, and the compiling of the clips and monologues that gave life to tracks like Hippies!, I Got Monkeys In Me!, Double Standard, and more. Overall, this was a fun project, and I think it plays that way.

As with all of the DJ Mydnyt releases, the tracks on this album are creative commons releases and are available to be heard via its Behance Portfolio entry. Hopefully, the planned site redesign will be ready soon and all of the albums will be available for download. In the meantime, if you would like to get free .mp3 versions of the tracks you can contact me through the blog here.

Unlike the other albums, Original DJ has a single that comes complete with two b-side tracks that are not available on the album itself. The single is The Raven, the re-imagining of Poe’s classic poem.

The B-sides on the single include a track called Double Standard, compiled using Charlotte Gainsbourg’s iconic monologue from the film The Cement Garden. One of my favorite monologues of all time. The other track, Crouching Trancer, Hidden DJ, is nothing but pure musical excitement.

If you get a chance to check out the tracks, I would love to get your feedback, either here or at Behance. And if you are a fan, rest assured that there is more from DJ Mydnyt on the horizon.

The Day that the Hope Died! (a re-imagination of Don McLean’s American Pie)

A short, short time ago…
I can still remember
How that promise had given me hope.
I just knew if he’d had the chance
He would change this circumstance
And, maybe, we’d all find the strength to cope.

But soon all your words made me shiver,
With every speech that you’d deliver.
Bad moves up on the hill:
Turns out you’re just one more shill.

I knew the truly callous smiled
As you had him killed there before his child
Then with your call for precrime trial,
I broke free of your beguile…

So good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.

Did you read the Patriot Act,
Before keeping that shit on its track?
Or just act as if you did?
Can you not see this route’s taken toll?
We were never meant to play this role,
We believed you’d no agenda’s hid!

Well, we know more now, than we did then,
And you can bet we won’t buy it again.
You’ve crossed too many lines,
For us to trust you one more time.

I was a hope filled bright-eyed optimist
After Bush reigned with a tyrant’s fist,
I just knew, you’d not be like this,
But now, that hope has died.

I’ve started thinking,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.”

Now for three years we’ve been on our own
You’ve allowed cuts down to the bone,
Exactly like it used to be.
When the jester left, we all cried for change
You sold us all when you took the reigns
With a voice that made us all believe.

Oh, but while we looked the other way,
The jester’s will still won the day.
The courtroom was bypassed
So no questions would be asked.
And as Machiavelli played his part
We knew the change would never start,
And we sang dirges for your heart,
The day that the hope died.

We were singing,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.”

Healthcare, welfare, and veteran’s fair share
Compromised seemingly without a care
The people’s voice still heard last.
You keep failing the lower class
While the corporate sector gets a pass,
Like the jester never moved into the past.

Now the withdrawal call would be more grand
With no reroute to Afghanistan
We want to celebrate,
But you’re a buck short and day late!
Cause the suits bought more priority,
Interest groups fought equality,
And you stood by so idly
The day that the hope died.

I’ve started thinking,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.”

It’s fair to say we all stood as one,
A generation lost and numb
With no desire to fight again.
We held on, fast to reason, past the quick
As Jack’s lack of conviction slipped
And we found it was the fire, we were in.

Oh, and as I watch you take the stage
My hands, they clench in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Will release us from this spell.
And as the siren’s cry, it splits the night
Drone’s fly, to kill everything in sight,
You stand proud and claim we’re in the right
The day that the hope died.

And I’m singing,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.”

I met a girl who campaigned for you
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
So I went out on the interwebs
To see what news I had not read,
But the man ruled indy news no longer play.

And in the streets, the children die…
The poor get crushed, and the dreamers cry…
And not a word gets spoken…
For the people all are broken.
And I made my way back to those words
That touched me deeply when they were heard
But nothing at all in me stirred,
The day that the hope died…

And so I’m thinking,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
And that was the day that the hope died.
That was the day that the hope died.”

And now I’m singing,
“Good-bye, your promise was a lie.
We were restrained thinking that change
Would just rain from the sky.
But we woke realizing wool had been pulled over our eyes
Knowing that was the day that the hope died.”

In this follow up to the minicasts where our coverage began Rob is joined once more to discuss the situation in the Gulf of Mexico, and the resulting fallout from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill from 2010. Jennifer Rexford returns to continue to shed light on the lack of available resources for those impacted, despite claims from BP that civil aid organizations in the area have been given funding from the big oil conglomerate. Questions arise about the calculation of settlement funds and the legality of included clauses seeking to indemnify BP against any further legal action upon acceptance of said settlements, given the situations that many of the families taking these payments are currently facing. The direness of their own financial stability along with the continued destabilization of the area only increases the stress and tension forcing so many families hands. We also touch on the media blackout that has been fostered and continues in the affected areas. As Jennifer and her family get ready to relocate out of the region she has a special message to all those naysayers and perpetuaters of the problems punctuated with a moment borrowed from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Episode 57 – bin Laden!

In this new episode Rob explores the implications and circumstances surrounding the US’s assassination of wanted international terrorist Osama bin Laden. Dissecting President Obama’s overly celebratory and arrogant declarations upon announcing the killing of bin Laden and sharing numerous reports to offer insight as to just what exactly took place in the compound in Abottabad. With Pakistan denying any knowledge of bin Laden’s whereabouts and our Navy SEAL mission to ‘bring him to justice’, one has to wonder what role they had in all of this, and what consequences they will suffer as the smoke settles and full truth comes to light. Also, as that light shines on the truth of what happened, the US needs to answer some very specific questions regarding the legality of our handing out of this brand of ‘justice’. Rob also looks at some of the questions surrounding the incident with feedback, music, and more.
