Have you read Ishmael by Daniel Quinn? It’s a great look at how western culture can not be sustained indefinitely. It also takes a look at how our history, primarily through the Bible, can be viewed as metaphors for different cultural shifts in humanity’s view of the environment. Excellent read.

When ever my conservative friends preach to me about how un-patriotic it is to criticize your government and to not follow it blindly, I remind them of another blindly patriotic nation in world history… Nazi Germany. I think we all know how that ended.

Being a former high school biology teacher, I particularly enjoyed the Ask Science Dude segment. I taught in Florida where were not allowed to teach “evolution” but rather “Change over time” (what’s that say for their confidence in students’ intelligence not to pick up on the semantics). Still, it never ceized to amaze me how many students would be presented with the evidence and then say something like, “we’ll I believe animals evolve, but not humans.” Needless to say, I had to quit and leave Florida before my head exploded.
